The Ladies Section at Hawarden Golf Club 2016
It has been a busy year for the ladies at Hawarden Golf Club. With competitions every week, and lots of lovely weather we are healthy, happy and most of us have a bit of a suntan too!
We have had new ladies join us this year – some are experienced players, but most are beginners. All have enjoyed a warm welcome, and we encourage everybody to join in the competitions. With a growing junior section we are pleased to welcome mums, aunties, grandmas and sisters of our junior members. Irene Willis, our Lady Captain, makes sure our new members are made very welcome.
Our competitions kicked off in March with the Lady Captain’s Drive-in which is when most of us are just coming out of hibernation and take it gently, joining the hardy ladies who play all through the winter. A couple of weeks later we were playing for Easter eggs!
We have an excuse to dress up for the cocktail evening in March, and in April we have afternoon tea, although you can spot fizz instead of tea on some of the tables. The Christmas party is always good fun, too.
Some ladies like to take part in competitions against other clubs, and last year we played against some local clubs, as well as heading down the coast to Porthmadog, Prestatyn and Llandudno. We also have a fun day out on a bus. This year we went to Rhos on Sea, and next year we are going to play at Woolton.
We have had many prize winners this year, including Ellen Murray (The Committee Prize), Val Digby (Coronation Cup and Shone Trophy), Clare Rimmer (Lady President’s Prize), Karen Houghton (Lady Captain’s Prize), Wendy Copping (Davies Trophy) and Sheila Hinks-Edwards (Vet’s Trophy)
Special congratulations to Val who has not been playing very long, but won two of our major competitions this year! Jenny Jones and Pat Roberts each had a hole in one!
New members are always welcome. And if you don’t play golf we welcome social members who are always welcome to attend our non-golfing events such as the cocktail evening, strawberries and champagne evening, coffee mornings, quiz nights and themed music and food evenings.
